Sealed Bearings on Inline Skates
Sealed bearings or non-serviceable bearings have a teflon or rubber seal that is designed to keep dust, water and other elements out of the bearing case. These "sealed bearings" are prepacked with grease and do not need any routine maintenance other than wiping dust and grit from the exterior and keeping them dry.
When sealed bearings no longer perform properly, they should be removed from your skates, and new bearings should be installed in their place.
Seals consisting of synthetic rubber moulded to a steel plate are incorporated into the outer rings of these ball bearings. There are two types of sealed bearings. One uses contact seals and the other non-contact seals. Contact seals provide excellent dust penetration but have a start up torque penalty, hence the send option of non-contact seals which are designed for low torque applications.
Non-removeable steel plates that cover the sides of a bearing, and protect it from contamination and loss of lubrication material. ZZ bearings have sheilds on both sides and Z bearings have shields on one side only. a bearing will either have non-removeable shields on the sides, or removeable seals.
These have rubbing seals that seal against recesses in the inner ring shoulder. This limits the speed to around 70% of the corresponding unsealed bearing. Sealed bearings are lubricated for life and hence under extreme conditions life can be short. However they are becoming increasingly popular for smaller deep groove ball bearings operating under light loads and moderate speeds.
